ZIP codes within a radius

Every ZIP code within the distance you choose of a place, with its city, state and population, on the map and in a table you can download.

How to use it

  1. Set the centre: an address, your location, or a click on the map.
  2. Set the radius with a preset or a number.
  3. Read the list, nearest first, with the population of each ZIP code.
  4. Press Download CSV or Copy ZIPs.

5 practical uses

  1. Build a mailing list of ZIP codes around a store or a clinic.
  2. Set the delivery or service area of a business by ZIP code.
  3. Target an advert to the ZIP codes near a location.
  4. Find the ZIP codes to filter in a job or property search.
  5. List the ZIP codes for a franchise territory.

The maths behind it

The centre of each ZIP code is compared with the circle centre: a bounding-box test in degrees rules out most, then the haversine great-circle distance decides, and the list is sorted by that distance. The population is the sum over the ZIP codes inside.

Notes

ZIP code positions and populations are the 2020-census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas from SimpleMaps' free database (CC BY 4.0), 33,000 of them. Each is one point, the centre of the area, so a ZIP code counts as inside or outside the circle by that point; a big rural ZIP code is only partly inside in truth. Post-office-box and military ZIP codes are included where they have a position.

For the number of people inside the circle see population within a radius; for a single code, the ZIP code lookup.

Questions and answers

How is "within the radius" decided?

By the centre point of each ZIP code. A ZIP code counts as inside when its centre is inside the circle, so a large rural one can be only partly inside in truth.

Where do the populations come from?

From the 2020 census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, through the SimpleMaps free database.

Can I get the ZIP codes as a list for a mailing?

Yes. Copy ZIPs puts the codes on the clipboard, comma-separated.

Embed this tool on your website

Paste this code where the tool should appear. It shows the tool alone, without this page's text, and links back here. It is free to use; the map data credit stays on the map.

<iframe src="https://waymorphic.com/tools/zip-codes-within-radius?embed=1" width="100%" height="760" style="border:0;border-radius:12px;max-width:100%" loading="lazy" allow="geolocation; fullscreen; clipboard-write" title="ZIP codes within a radius – Waymorphic Map"></iframe>

Change height to suit your page. To open the tool with a place already set, add the settings from this page's address bar (the part after #) to the end of the src. The embedded tool asks the visitor's browser for their location only when they press the button, and the allow attribute lets that work inside the frame.
