Type a county name, or its FIPS code, and see its outline, its population and every ZIP code in it. For a name shared by several states, pick from the list.
How to use it
Type the county name, with the state if you know it, or the five-digit FIPS code.
If several counties match, pick one from the list.
Read the outline, the population, the area and the ZIP codes in the county.
5 practical uses
Find the FIPS code of a county for a dataset or a form.
See a county's outline and where it is in the state.
List the ZIP codes in a county for a mailing or a service area.
Check the population and the area of a county.
Tell apart counties that share a name in different states.
The maths behind it
The county outline comes from the Census Bureau topology; its area is the geodesic area of the polygon on the ellipsoid, and its centre is the centroid of that polygon. The population is the sum of the 2020 ZIP code populations assigned to the county, weighted by the share of each ZIP code inside it.
Notes
The 3,200 counties and county equivalents (parishes, boroughs, census areas, independent cities) come from the Census Bureau at 1:10m. Populations are the sum of the 2020 ZIP code populations assigned to the county, so they are close but not official. FIPS codes are the two-digit state code followed by the three-digit county code. To find the county where you are, see what county am I in.
A five-digit code: two digits for the state and three for the county. 06037 is Los Angeles County, California.
How many counties are there?
About 3,200 counties and equivalents: parishes in Louisiana, boroughs and census areas in Alaska, and independent cities in Virginia.
Why is the population approximate?
It is the sum of the ZIP code populations assigned to the county, which is close to the census count but not equal to it.

Paste this code where the tool should appear. It shows the tool alone, without this page's text, and links back here. It is free to use; the map data credit stays on the map.
Change height to suit your page. To open the tool with a place already set, add the settings from this page's address bar (the part after #) to the end of the src. The embedded tool asks the visitor's browser for their location only when they press the button, and the allow attribute lets that work inside the frame.
