5 practical uses
- Find the towns to visit within an hour's drive of a base.
- List the cities a regional office can serve.
- Plan a tour or a sales trip around a hub.
- Find nearby towns for accommodation, work or school.
- Build a list of places for a survey or a market study.
The maths behind it
Each place's centre is tested against the circle: a bounding-box check in degrees, allowing for the shrinking of longitude with latitude by 1/cos φ, then the haversine great-circle distance. The direction is the initial bearing from the centre to the place.
Notes
Cities and towns come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0): every populated place with 5,000 or more people, 46,000 of them, with the population GeoNames records, which for a city is usually the municipality rather than the metropolitan area. Distances are to the centre point of each place.
For US ZIP codes in a circle, see ZIP codes within a radius; for the closest place only, the nearest city.
