Colour the world, or the United States, one region at a time: pick a colour, click a country or a state. Name the colours for a legend, download the picture, share the link.
How to use it
Choose Countries or US states.
Pick a colour and click a region to paint it. Click again with the same colour to clear it.
Click a legend label to rename the colour, for example "Visited".
Press PNG to download the map, or copy the link to share it.
5 practical uses
Make a map of the countries you have visited.
Colour sales territories, franchise areas or delivery regions.
Show where a product ships, a language is spoken or a law applies.
Mark the states a team covers or a licence is valid in.
Make a quiz or a lesson map of regions.
The maths behind it
Each region is a polygon from the TopoJSON topology, which stores shared borders once as arcs; the page decodes it to GeoJSON and colours each polygon by a property the map engine reads. The painted regions are stored in the link as their numeric codes, grouped by colour.
Notes
Countries come from Natural Earth (1:50m) with their conventional borders; US states from the Census Bureau. Small island states are small on the map, so zoom in for them. The painted areas are listed by name below the map.
Yes. Every painted region is in the link in the address bar; copy it and send it, or bookmark it.
Why can I not find a small island state?
It is there but small at world zoom. Zoom in on the map to click it.
Which borders are used?
Natural Earth 1:50m country outlines with their conventional borders, and the Census Bureau outlines for US states.
Embed this tool on your website
Paste this code where the tool should appear. It shows the tool alone, without this page's text, and links back here. It is free to use; the map data credit stays on the map.
Change height to suit your page. To open the tool with a place already set, add the settings from this page's address bar (the part after #) to the end of the src. The embedded tool asks the visitor's browser for their location only when they press the button, and the allow attribute lets that work inside the frame.
