Waymorphic Map vs MapTiler Cloud

MapTiler makes the OpenMapTiles schema that Waymorphic Map's tiles follow, so the two are close cousins: a style written for one usually works on the other. MapTiler Cloud is a full product with a free plan for personal use, a request quota and an API key. Waymorphic Map is the basemap alone, free for any use, with no key or quota.

Facts about MapTiler Cloud checked September 2026 against its own pages. Prices, limits and terms change; check there before you decide. If something here is out of date, it is our mistake, not theirs.

Where MapTiler Cloud is the better choice

The honest list. If one of these is what you need, this is not the page that talks you out of it.

  • Satellite, terrain and weather

    MapTiler serves imagery, elevation and weather layers from one account. Waymorphic Map serves the basemap only.

  • Hosting your own data

    Upload a GeoJSON or a GeoPackage and MapTiler turns it into tiles you can style. Waymorphic Map has no upload; you serve your own data yourself, as the examples do.

  • The style editor

    A visual editor for your own map style, with hosting for the result.

  • Search under a contract

    Support and terms for commercial use, for the tiles and the search alike. Waymorphic Map's search is free and keyless, but best effort.

Where Waymorphic Map fits

What you gain by pointing the map here instead.

  • No quota, no pause

    A MapTiler free plan stops serving for the month when the quota is used. Waymorphic Map has no quota; a busy month costs nothing and changes nothing.

  • Commercial use, free

    MapTiler's free plan is for personal projects. Waymorphic Map welcomes commercial sites and apps on the same free terms.

  • No key

    Nothing to restrict by domain and nothing to leak in a public repository.

  • The same schema

    Both serve the OpenMapTiles schema, so a style written for one is a small edit away from running on the other.

How to switch

If you use one of MapTiler's standard styles, switch the style URL. If you built a style of your own in MapTiler's editor, export it and point its source, glyphs and sprite at Waymorphic Map; the layers stay as they are, because the schema is the same.

maptiler.jsbefore
const map = new maplibregl.Map({
  container: 'map',
  style: 'https://api.maptiler.com/maps/streets-v2/style.json?key=YOUR_KEY',
  center: [4.9041, 52.3676],
  zoom: 12,
});
waymorphic.jsafter
const map = new maplibregl.Map({
  container: 'map',
  style: 'https://tiles.waymorphic.com/styles/bright',
  center: [4.9041, 52.3676],
  zoom: 12,

Questions and answers

Are the tiles the same as MapTiler's?

They follow the same OpenMapTiles schema and come from the same OpenStreetMap data, so the layers and attributes match. MapTiler adds its own data in places, such as contours and satellite.

Will a MapTiler style work as it is?

After pointing its sources at Waymorphic Map, yes for the OpenMapTiles layers. Layers that read MapTiler-only sources need to be removed or replaced.

Why is Waymorphic Map free when MapTiler charges?

Because it serves the basemap only, from static files behind a CDN, and nothing else. MapTiler runs a much larger product.
