Magnetic declination

How far a compass needle points away from true north at any place, on any date, from the World Magnetic Model 2025. With the dip, the field strength and how fast it is changing.

How to use it

  1. Choose a place: search, use your location, or click the map.
  2. Set the date and, if it matters, the height above sea level.
  3. Read the declination and the other elements. The orange line on the map points to magnetic north, the dashed grey line to true north.

5 practical uses

  1. Correct a compass bearing for a map, or a map bearing for a compass.
  2. Set the declination on a handheld compass or a GPS unit.
  3. Check an old map's declination note against today's value.
  4. Align a telescope, a sundial or a survey baseline to true north.
  5. Understand why a phone compass and a paper map disagree.

The maths behind it

The World Magnetic Model describes the Earth's main field as a spherical harmonic expansion of degree 12: the potential is V = R Σ (R/r)ⁿ⁺¹ Σ (gₙᵐ cos mλ + hₙᵐ sin mλ) Pₙᵐ(cos θ), with 168 Gauss coefficients and their yearly changes. The page evaluates the field components X (north), Y (east) and Z (down) from the gradient of V at the place and date, then declination = atan2(Y, X), inclination = atan2(Z, √(X²+Y²)) and the total field F = √(X²+Y²+Z²).

Reading the numbers

The model

The World Magnetic Model is produced by NOAA's NCEI and the British Geological Survey for the US and UK defence departments, and is the model built into phones, aircraft and ships. WMM2025 is valid from late 2024 to late 2029; outside that range the tool still computes, but the error grows. Local iron, power lines and the metal of a car add anomalies the model cannot know about.

Questions and answers

What is magnetic declination?

The angle between true north and the direction a compass needle points. East declination means the needle points east of true north. It varies from place to place and changes slowly over the years.

How do I correct a compass bearing?

To turn a map bearing into a compass bearing, subtract an east declination or add a west one. The card gives the worked example for your place.

How accurate is the model?

The World Magnetic Model is accurate to about one degree over most of the Earth. Local iron, power lines and the metal of a car add errors it cannot know about.

Embed this tool on your website

Paste this code where the tool should appear. It shows the tool alone, without this page's text, and links back here. It is free to use; the map data credit stays on the map.

<iframe src="https://waymorphic.com/tools/magnetic-declination?embed=1" width="100%" height="760" style="border:0;border-radius:12px;max-width:100%" loading="lazy" allow="geolocation; fullscreen; clipboard-write" title="Magnetic declination – Waymorphic Map"></iframe>

Change height to suit your page. To open the tool with a place already set, add the settings from this page's address bar (the part after #) to the end of the src. The embedded tool asks the visitor's browser for their location only when they press the button, and the allow attribute lets that work inside the frame.
